Yes, here they are! Last month’s contest winners. They answered the question, “When does my next book, How I Met My Countess, come out?” correctly with December 29, 2009. It being a holiday yesterday, I <strike>made</strike> cajouled the older little hero into sorting bookmarks and goodies into 10 envelopes and they will go to the post office tomorrow headed to:

Elle Z. of Marina, CA

Liza G. of Triangle, VA

Tonya of Taylor, MI

Nancy H. of Sacramento, CA

Barbara M. of Reynoldsburg, OH

Judy S. of Richmond, IN

Melinda Y. of Milwaukee, WI

Desiree L. of Mokena, IL

Lani M. of Tacoma, WA

Judi B. of San Jose, CA

If you don’t see your name listed there, well, try again. There is a new contest up and running and you could be on the list next month!

And after you get done with the contest entry, think about taking a look at the wonderful downloadable calendar for 2010 I had designed for you all–so no one will miss either of the 2010 books. Yes, I know Countess technically comes out in 2009, but in publishing speak, it is a “January” book. I don’t make these rules, I just have to decipher them. I still have to do the math every time they tell me my publishing date. But I’ve gone and done the hard work for you and put them right on the calendar nice a big. Enjoy!

Can anyone believe it is almost the holidays and nearly the New Year? Yikes!

As I said the other day, I am catching up. And apparently I am catching up to the idea of blogging twice a week as well. I was off with the the kids running errands yesterday (nothing like being ten minutes out from the orthodontist and hearing, “Oh, no! I forgot my retainer” which was the sole reason for going) and listening to the only three Beatle’s songs Matthew likes (Help, Daytripper, and Lady Madonna), I recalled that it was Thursday and I hadn’t blogged. Sorry, I was busy writing the proposal for the next book and sort of forgot a bunch of things. I also remembered that I had competing lunch and hair cut appointments for today. And I still need to cancel trampoline class.

As I was darting about town and/or sitting in traffic, I also remembered I needed to post the June winners. So with no small measure of fanfare, here are the June Contest winners:

Nisha P. of Palos Hills, IL
Karen H. of Land O Lakes, FL
Thuan N. of Land O Lakes, FL
Cathie M. of Buffalo, NY
Jean M. of Broomfield, CO
Rachel M. of Long Beach, CA
Randi M. of Eufaula, AL
Elaine C. of Ormond Beach, FL
Linda K. of Tipton, MO
Debra G. of Wolcott, CT

And since I posted the winners, then yes, there is a new Contest posted. So make sure to enter.

Oh, and one other thing I forgot. If you would like to see the new cover for How I Met My Countess and get a little hint about the story, check out my Coming Soon page. What’s coming soon in your life?

Wow! One, I can’t believe all the nice things you’ve all said, your kind thoughts, the prayers, because I’ve felt the love, most certainly. Nice to know there are so many people out there who care, especially for someone you’ve never met. So thank you. I wish I could say I am popping back up and right back at full speed, but I am having a heck of a time getting over this bug. And now the little one has it, so here I go again.

I’ve had to yield my spot on the couch, and put on my Nurse Mom hat. And worse, I am off to Orlando on Wednesday for a librarian’s conference and then the booksigning in Clearwater, FL on Saturday, so I will have to pass the hat to the DH. At least he’s got experience with this, he was my hero last week. But still, the mom-guilt is there.

I did get my contest packs together for the April contest and the winners are:

Gladys P. of Houston, TX

Monicke B. of Baton Rouge, LA

Cynthia P. of Mooresville, IN

Sandy M. of Logansport, IN

Lori P. of Hamlet, NC

Naomi C. of Yuma, AZ

Luisa D. of Staten Island, NY

Jane S. of Wasola, MO

Lois M. of Perth Amboy, NJ

Laurie T. of Burleson, TX

If you are a winner, watch your mail. If not, enter for this month’s pack over on my Contest page.

Sorry if you’ve written me and I haven’t written back-who would have thought that Pippin and Dash’s story would generate so much email and chatter! Boy, folks are really passionate about this story. Do write me if you have something to say, but remember, I’m a little behind right now . . . in many ways.

I have to say the number one thing that struck me about Wichita. The people are really, really nice. I mean, really nice. Polite, helpful, friendly, always ready to help and pitch in. Traveling with Niki Burnham, who hails from the Boston part of the country, and me coming from the West Coast, we met in the middle–and discovered where all the good manners have gone too. Now I am not saying there are no good manners on the coasts, but when you are just struck dumb by how kind people are, then you realize what is missing back home.

And with that said, I have to say the trip to Wichita was really a lot of fun. From the moment I met Niki in the Dallas airport–pity the poor women in the row in front of us trying to sleep–because we spent the hour or so flight catching up. By the time we got to the Hyatt Regency in downtown Wichita, the restaurant was about to close so we took our luggage to dinner, and ordered up what you should be eating in Kansas. Steaks. And the best darn steak I have ever sunk a tooth into. Gosh it was good. Fed, tired and looking toward a flat out busy day, we found our room and got a good night’s sleep.

Waking up to this view. Yes, the view does go on for a long, long ways. Read this as a polite way of saying, the place is flat. And the walkway along the river goes all the way into downtown and must be really lovely in the summer when the flowers are blooming and the trees have leafed out. Like Seattle, Wichita is still holding onto winter–with both hands.

The big shock came when we went to stuff the goody bags for the librarians and asked Jeanne down at the front desk to bring up our boxes. I knew I had two that I had shipped, and Harper Collins said they would send some books, and Niki thought she would have one from Houghton Mifflin and RWA had promised to send some copies of Romance Sells. Then the knock on the door came and we discovered 14 boxes of goodies that we had to sort and stuff into goody bags. It was an embarrassment of riches, but we got to work (nibbling on the lovely fruit and cheese plate Jeanne sent up because she took pity on all the work ahead of us) and stuffed 50 + bags of books, shelf talkers and all kinds of goodies, including promo packets from Jane Porter.

Needless to say, our talk became a big hit–because we lured them all in with our great swag. The talk was fun and over before it began, but it was great to share all the wonderful RWA resources with the librarians, talk about the library programs we’ve done (like this one,) and share your list of authors with them. I have never been so proud of all of you as I was when during the Q&A one of the librarians asked how she could find new authors or make recommendations. I held up your list and told them it was “reader approved.”

Speaking of the list, I did promise one of you a gift certificate for helping compile that list and the winner is Teresa K. Congrats Teresa, and thank you to everyone who contributed.

Oh, and if you are a librarian putting together a conference or a reader’s advisory meeting and would like me and Niki to come speak, please contact me and I’ll let you know all the particulars of what we have to say.

I would just like to thank everyone who entered my last contest and congratulate the last two winners:

Jackie W. of LaMesa, California

Heather R. of Knoxville, Tennessee

Each of you will be receiving in the mail very shortly an autographed hardcopy of <http>Love Letters from a Duke</http>. Congratulations!!

If you are saying to yourself, “Hey, I want to win something”, you can stop muttering! I’m starting a new contest today and you’ll love the prize. You see I have one advanced reader’s copy left of Confessions of a Little Black Gown. (Remember these laying around on my desk last December? I was using them as props in this post and everyone was too busy lusting after the ARCs to read the post?)

Since I am far too practical to let it go to waste, I think one lucky winner should get that book the weekend before it goes on sale. You know, bragging rights and all. So if you want to win it, and you want to get it via overnight delivery so you have it on Friday, March 27th so you can read it before everyone else, you need to do the following:

Answer the following question: What is the handsome, perfect man in Thatcher’s office wearing that has Tally so in a horror? (Hint: you can find the answer here).

Use the entry form on my Contest page to submit your answer before midnight, March 25, 2009.

All the rest of the rules on my contest page apply.

Good luck!!

It’s. That. Time. Again. Excuse my enthusiasm, but it is time for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Forget all the other dog shows that populate the television, this is the Academy Awards for Dogs. This is the big show.

I get all excited and sit glued to the tv for hours watching the best of the best dogs as they parade by. Then the next morning I call my agent and we compare notes. “What did you think of the Bernese?” “Wasn’t that <insert toy group dog of choice here> hilarious?”

This is my tenth year of this, my February addiction, and every year I love it just a little bit more. I watch the breeds looking for dogs I would love to own. And I listen to the commentary for historical notes about the various older breeds and then research them for my books. The Westminster Dog Show has given me such characters as Rowan the Irish Wolfhound from Tempted by the Night:

and Brutus the nearly loveable, full of small dog attitude Affenpinscher from Love Letters from a Duke:

So settle in tonight and tomorrow night and go to the dogs. And after you’ve watched the Westminster, then go rent “Best in Show” which is a tongue-in-cheek “documentary” about a big dog show. It’s a hilarious follow up to watching the real thing.
