Oh, this is such a hard question because I love every character! But I think my favorite is Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham. I haven’t watched the first 2 episodes of Season 3 yet….I’ll do that tonight and I have to say I’m looking forward to watching Shirley MacLaine’s character clash with Lady Violet! It’s terrible to admit, but I haven’t watched the series yet. I do have the first two seasons ordered from my library, however there are 40 requests before me! From what I’ve read, Shirley MacLaine’s character is a hoot and I would probably enjoy that character.
I love Maggie Smith’s Character… The Dower Crowley. Love her one liners and whit!

Thanks for doing this! I love Downton Abbey although I only watched the first season this past December and have only seen a few of the episodes from season two and then the most recent. I like Mary a lot. She is a great complex character. But I have to say that my favorite character is Anna for her accepting and encouraging attitude.
I like an underdog, so I’ll go with Lady Edith. She doesn’t receive the attention her sisters receive.
My favorite has to be Anna Smith, Head housemaid. She stands by her man. The hot Mr. Bates. FREE Mr. Bates.

This is a thought-provoking question. The first season I loved Matthew and hated Mary.
The second season I loved Anna and got very annoyed with Lord Grantham for starting a relationship with a servant IN HIS OWN HOUSE! Had she found out, Cora would have been devastated.
This season Matthew seems really caught up with having broken Lavinia’s heart and not wanting to use her father’s legacy to save Downton. I feel he should never have gone forward with planning to marry Mary if he’s going to throw the past up in her face. I’m liking Mary better than Matthew this season. Anna is my favorite, though. I also liked the Dowager and Cora, the mother, though all three seasons. Cora has shown great strength after learning about her husband’s risky ventures. Maggie Smith’s character has also shown a lot of resilience and she’s funny.
The Dowager Countess would be my favorite character.
Another vote for the Dowager Countess! I’ve also been fond of Mary from the beginning, she seems so strong!

That is a very hard question. Of the upstairs crowd, I love the Dowager and Mary. Downstairs, I love the cook, Mrs. Patmore and Mrs. Hughes.
Honestly I never have gotten into it. 🙁

I’m going to have to go with Bates. The mystery of his ex-wife’s death and Anna’s steadfast devotion provide such a wealth of story and character development. I’ve become a big fan of the actor. He had a smalll part in The Raven, but he is in North and South and the Candleford to Lark Rise series.

They all do a great job with their characters – even the ones that you don’t like. But Maggie Smith and the Cook steal the show when they are in a scene…Such a great show!

Without a doubt Lady Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham. Maggie Smith has the best lines and deadpans all of them with such wit. She can say more with one look than most of the other characters say with their lines.

I would have to say my favorite character is Branson 🙂 He really has evolved and continues to evolve (I’ve seen the whole new season already). He’s a good man and truly shows his worth & backbone without shame.
I love Violet, she always says just what is on her mind and I always laugh at her comments.

Daisy is my favorite character! She really exemplifies the evolution of the young woman. Her aspirations and struggles can be applied to any period of time and I adore that about her character.
While I love Violet, Lady Grantham and her quick wit, I have to say my favorite character so far has to be Daisy. Really who would want to be a scullery maid, but she is the one to hear all the good gossip about the family! I like that her spunk is coming out during Season 3.

I haven’t seen the show so I really don’t have a favorite character. I have heard that it is a really good program though. I’m hoping it comes out eventually in DVD’s so I can see it from the beginning.
